Organ donations. The Grégory Lemarchal effect

When the death of Grégory Lemarchal, winner of Star Academy in 2004, was announced on 30 April 2007, it gave organ donations an incredible boost.
The tragedy of Grégory Lemarchal, taken from us by cystic fibrosis on 30 April 2007, at the age of 23, moved the whole of France. The announcement of the death of the young singer, who was waiting for a lung transplant, was an incredible impetus for organ donations. The website of the France-Adot Association tripled the number of visits it received from May to July 2007. Nearly 100.000 donor cards were requested on the Internet all over France, between May and June 2007. This wave was felt by all the voluntary workers of France-Adot (Association for the donation of organs and human tissue), and particularly in Brittany.
« The region moved from 10th position, in 2007, to 2nd position, in 2008, just behind Pays-de-Loire. This increase was also due to the distribution of napkins providing information on organ donation in all the university restaurants in Brittany », explains Hervé Le Serre, general secretary of France Adot and president of the Côtes-d’Armor association.
In 2007, the departements in Brittany alone, registered 1.167 requests for donor cards through the Internet in Côtes-d’Armor, 3.699 (5.012 in all) in Finistère, 1.955 in Morbihan and 2.514 in Ille-et-Vilaine. In the year 2008, the results were not quite so exceptional, but there was nevertheless an increase in relation to 2006, respectively of 734, 1.451 (2.714 in all), 1.164 and 1.384.
