What are the aims of « Vaincre la Mucovisciose » (Beating cystic fibrosis) ?
It is a community of parents, patients and doctors who have united to fight against this genetic disease. We have 40 employees and a budget of 13 millions euros exclusively from charity, receiving no aid from the state. We have four major objectives : to help research progress, to improve treatment and the quality of life for sufferers, to develop information on the disease and to organise fund raising.
What medical projects are being backed ?
Accelerating the passage from fundamental research to clinical applications, as in the case with the development of new drugs.
Research on lung transplants and particulary chronic rejection.
Helping cystic fibrosis skill and resource centres whose means have been reduced even though their needs have increased.
Improving clinical research by creating plans for action uniting doctors, nurses and associations.
What do you hope for ?
I believe that in the years to come we will see very important discoveries in relation to proteins. We will succeed in making them work better and as a result cystic fibrosis sufferers will be able to live longer with a better quality of life. I believe that this research is more advanced than that of gene therapy, which seems to be more complicated and more hypothetical.
