European cystic fibrosis conference

A homage to the work carried out

The region is very proud that Brittany and the city of Brest have been chosen to host the European cystic fibrosis conference. We feel that this choice recognises the quality of the medical work carried out over the years by teams of top-level researchers, doctors and nurses who fight relentlessly to improve the daily lives of sufferers.
Encouraged by the families, the regional mobilisation and the thousands of donations, the research laboratories and care organisations in Brittany are now at a top-level.
Much has been done in 20 years, since the discovery of the gene responsible for this genetic disease !
The tip of Brittany created a genetic research centre benefiting from the Inserm label from virtually nothing. However, above all, the quality of care continued to progress over the years, which resulted in a spectacular increase in the life expectancy of sufferers. To be convinced of this, you only have to know that since the start of neonatal screening in 1988 in our region, only few children in Brittany born after this date have died of cystic fibrosis.
Of course, there is still a lot of work to be done to discover a genetic treatment, and we still need to communicate a lot to facilitate the donation of organs. The sufferers and their families also need a lot of courage to fight against the disease. However, there is still living hope and there is still the exceptionally loyal solidarity of the Breton people. Between Brittany and the fight against cystic fibrosis there is, no doubt, a link unique in Europe. This reason was sufficient to organise the European conference here.
